Surface-Water Information and Data

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) network in South Carolina provides real-time water-stage, streamflow and precipitation data at over 170 stations across the state. These stations record data on 15-minute intervals and transmit the data via satellite to the National Water Information System (NWIS) database. From that database, the data are made publicly available on the USGS NWISWeb (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/sc/nwis/rt). All data from active stations as well as historical datasets are available.

Data from these stations are used in various applications including:

  • Planning, designing, operating and maintaining the nation's water management systems
  • Issuing flood warning to protect lives and reduce property damage
  • Designing highways and bridges
  • Mapping floodplains
  • Recreational uses
  • Monitoring environmental conditions and protecting aquatic habitats
  • Protecting water quality and regulating pollutant discharges
  • Managing water rights and transboundary water issues
  • Education and research
