Our camera is experiencing technical difficulties

We have installed a webcam at Rocky Branch at Whaley St. to allow you to view (in real time) the current conditions.

You can take temporary control of the camera by clicking "Play" button in the middle of the screen. Then click the "Control" button at the bottom of the screen. The slider bar at the top controls the pan (left/right) and the left-side slider bar controls the tilt (up/down). The zoom is controlled by the slider on the right-side. You can use the 3 buttons at the bottom right to (1) pause the image, (2) view fullscreen, and (3) control the camera position. Once you have control of the camera, a box with preset camera positions appears. Select a preset position to move the camera to the selected position.

To conserve battery power, the camera is turned off at night. During periods of flooding, the South Atlantic Water Science Center - South Carolina will take control of the camera.

USGS station 02169506, Rocky Branch at Whaley Street at Columbia, SC is operated in cooperation with the City of Columbia, SC. Rocky Branch has a small (<3 square miles) drainage area, with the majority of that drainage being impervious surfaces. Rainfall events in the Rocky Branch drainage basin often cause flash flood conditions at this intersection and in the Five Points area of Columbia. The USGS station monitors the elevation of Rocky Branch every 2.5 minutes and records the data every 15 minutes. Real-time data from this station are available on the USGS NWISWeb. The station is also integrated with a traffic safety warning system. When the creek approaches flood stage, flashing lights warn motorists of potential water over the road. (The traffic safety warning system is maintained by the City of Columbia.)
